The user of a vehicle with radio, operations control centre or any other external communication systems probably knows this problem: An incoming radio message gets lost during the vehicle operation due to the playback of some kind of media or the car radio. At this instance the Radio Mute Interface from speedsignal comes into play.
The interface makes it possible to mute the media automatically as soon as an external +12V-signal comes in – potentially from a radio, emergency pager or any other control unit. The result: clear communication without having to manually interfere. Of course, the possibility of using the interface manually with a push button exists as well – which especially is of benefit to front-seat-passengers in a vehicle with touchscreen-heavy appliances.
The logic behind the system is simple: The moment that the according pin receives a +12V-signal, the head unit mutes the radio. When the signal turns back to the 0V/Ground the muting automatically stops. The driver doesn’t have to do anything further themselves. The interface additionally offers an important aspect of comfort: the driver can stop the muting manually at any time – through either the mute button on the steering wheel or the volume control. This is especially practical when the radio message is short or not of relevance. The original volume gets automatically restored. For more demanding situations such as emergency response or security-related communication the interface has an additional monitoring input. If +12V is present here, the user can still apply the manual volume control as described above. If 0V/Ground is received, the manual overturning of the muting is completely blocked – the radio remains mute as long as the external signal is active. This function is perfect for vehicles that under no circumstances can miss any communication.
The name says it all: the interface relies on a Plug&Play concept which won’t need any modifications to the vehicle’s wiring. The connection is made to the vehicle gateway via the included pin-to-pin cable. This pin-to-pin cable then gets plugged in between the established gateway connector and the gateway itself.
In the Transit/Tourneo Custom, the gateway is located on the right, above the front passenger’s footwell.
In the Kuga III it’s accessible beneath the centre console, which must be removed to access it.
The bundle contains everything necessary: the Radio Mute Model (3440009), the radio mute harness (C-3444103), the URI2 universal cable with open ends (C-3444102) and the 26-pole pin-to-pin cable for Ford (C-3406870).
The interface is marked with the E1 label and is designed for professional installation by trained technicians. speedsignal provides a statutory warranty of 2 years from the date of initial purchase – provided that the installation is performed in accordance with the included instructions and without any unauthorized modifications to the device.
For anyone who frequently works with radios or external communication systems in a commercial vehicle, the Radiomute offers a reliable, well-crafted interface that professionally solves an issue that does not exist in series-production vehicle – without any DIY work and without posing a risk to the vehicle’s electronics.
